Segregation - Baldur

  • Political power of African Americans was weakened step by step. by the turn of the 20th century, the government weakened their political power
  • The ridiculous voting test from government in order to make the African American fail in the test and retrain their rights for voting.
  • Jim Crow law: colored people should be separated in public and private places. The Supreme Court came to the verdict of “separate but equal” which allowed states to preserve segregated facilities.

  • Discrimination in the North towards African Americans was often more indirect rather than direct
  • About 1% of Blacks in America attended school and were separated from whites
  • African Americans were also forced to live in separate neighborhoods from whites
  • Discrimination in the West was usually focused towards Mexican or Asian immigrants.
  • Mexican immigrants were mostly forced into debt peonage – a system that bound laborers into slavery in order to pay off a debt to the employer.
  • The integration or assimilation of these immigrants into white society allegedly was known as, “the greatest threat to Western civilization and the White Race”.
  • The Gentlemen’s Agreement of 1907 and many major newspapers, like the Los Angeles Time and New York Time, contributed to this anti-Asian movement and xenophobia of Asian immigrants.

  • This increase caused competition between groups due to their color, culture, religion, and other factors.
  • Discrimination led to the creation of various laws and acts, such as the Jim Crow laws.
