All the different types of jazz have been developed by jazz because without it, smooth jazz, cool jazz, jazz fusion, etc. would not exist.
Jazz was created in the 1890s through the 1910s. It was based off of ragtime music, opera, and French and Spanish songs and dances.
In 1895, Buddy Bolden started his first band and it really started to become an actual thing in 1917 when Nick LaRocca and his Original Dixieland Jazz Band recorded the first Jazz record, "Livery Stable Blues."
Jazz Fusion: Jazz fusion developed in the 1960s. A synonym for jazz fusion is "jazz rock". Jazz fusion is the first type of jazz that uses electronic instruments.
Cool Jazz: Cool jazz arose quickly after WWII. Cool jazz has nice and soft vibrations. Ted Gioia and Lee Konitz were two major people in the development of cool jazz.
Smooth Jazz: Smooth jazz was influenced by rhythm and blues, funk, rock and roll, and pop music. It became more popular in the 60s and 70s. Smooth jazz is a combination of jazz, rock, blues, and pop music.
