Learning Objective: YWBAT create lines of specific spacing and length.

Essential Question: What is the purpose of construction lines?

Do Now: (2 min) Answer the following in your notes:

1. What are the dimensions that we use to set the borders of a drafting template?

2. Do you think the border has a purpose beyond putting a frame around our technical sketches? If so, what do you think that purpose is?

3. Look closely at the orthographic 3 view on the right. Which dimensions can we easily PROJECT from one view to the other? Which dimension is not so easily projected?

Do Now: (3 min)

1. What is the primary purpose of the border in drafting? (You’re welcome to use your notes!)

Unit 6: Manual Drafting

Line Exercises

2. Mr. Allatta draws an 8cm object line by first drawing a dark line that he knows is longer than 8cm, then marks 8cm along the line with the ruler, and then erases the extra.

Did Mr. Allatta create his 8cm line correctly? If yes, how do you know? If not, what should he have done instead?

Distance Between Angled Lines

The red line is normal (perpendicular) to the diagonal lines. The blue line measure the distance between the diagonal lines at the bottom of the grid.

Are the red line and the blue line the same length? How do you know?

Line Exercises

Lines Exercises Part 2

1. Tape your previous lines exercises on the table.

2. Just below yesterday's line exercises, create the following.

  • 45º lines - 0.5 cm spacing (enough to fill a 6 x 6 cm grid)
  • 30º lines - 0.5 cm spacing.
  • 60º lines - 0.5 cm spacing.
  • For all of the above, ALL lines should alternate between dark and light (ie. thick and thin).

How to create evenly spaced diagonal lines

To space diagonal parallel lines at a specific distance from one another, establish a line that is NORMAL (ie. perpendicular) to the diagonal lines that you will create and measure along the normal lines.

How do we project from the top to the side view?
