Cultural Lag

  • developed by Ogburn
  • it is the period of time between the initial change and the adjustment of other parts of the culture to the change
  • it focuses attention on the fact that change in one aspect of life may be more rapid than in a related aspect

parts of the culture that become dysfunctional.

meaning, they can no longer contribute to human adjustment.

2 divisions:

  • material culture
  • non-material culture

example:

  • the progress of automobiles (1969) while the social institutions and customs of road buliding took some time to adapt to the ability of new cars to travel much faster than horses and older car models.

most people remain in the region of their birth and these regions develop cultures which differ greatly from other regions in the same country.

this variation finds expression in:

  • religious diversity
  • styles of dress and diet
  • and in the development of mutually unintelligible languages

industrialism, nationalism, the expulsion of the American bases, and the acceptance of the national language in the provinces have all helped to bring the islands of the Philippine archipelago into a one common system.

  • uniform organization of economic activities
  • increases travel by the agents, promoters, and laborers in these enterprises
  • and stimulates the growth of mass population

- growth of bus, ship, air transport, and increased number of hotels

-newspaper circulation has increased

-radio and TV bring Filipino and some english programs to provincial and remote areas

Language is one of the major changes that occured which affected almost all Filipino concerns.

regional languages maintained some of their vitality and foreign language English is still the main vehicle for government, business, and higher education.

supposedly, Filipino will become the language used throughout the country, while English will be the language of communication with the rest of the world.

thank you! :)
