From your understanding of the problem, come up with a plan for solving the problem. This usually comes from what you know about how things work. This can also come from trying different things out.
Planning without doing is useless. Once you have a plan - try it out!
If it doesn't work - that's okay. That is what the next step is about.
Make sure that you understand what your problem is about.
What are you looking for? What are you trying to do?
It helps to write and rewrite the problem in words, as well as drawing pictures and diagrams.
So... How did your plan work out?
Did your solution make sense in relation to the problem? Great!
It didn't? That's great too. That just means you need to re-evaluate your steps:
1 - Did you understand the problem correctly? Can you try thinking about it differently?
2 - Did your plan fit your understanding of your problem? Perhaps a different approach is necessary.
3 - Was there an error in the execution of your plan?
Also, this reflection step can be used in more ways than, "Where did I mess up?"
It is the best place to ask:
"How can we solve this problem faster? Cleaner? Nicer? Prettier? Cheaper? Cooler?"
