The Black Rat

As cute as they may be, black rats can be
harmful to people and other species. There
are a lot of them too. A female rat can have
more than 80 babies
in one year!
They are an invasive species.
The province of Alberta
has no black rats whatsoever.
How did they do it?!
The Plan
Alberta use rat poisons and have a collection of bull snakes to hunt them.
But rats are very clever, and learn quickly.
I believe that we need to use a combination of strategies to effectively cut down the number of black rats, and the variety of ways may confuse the rats.
We could:
-find natural predators to hunt them
-use poison and traps
-regularly check places black rats would live, and destroy nests as soon as they are found
-keep crops in greenhouses so rats have less to eat
-throw all food waste in secure bins that only people can open
and fence off land fills with electrical currents strong enough to only kill rats
We can also make these devices, and put them in black rat habitats.
