Norte Chico Civilization

By Madison Vang

Near

Norte Chico is located on north-central coastal Peru. It was located near the Supe River. The river provided them fertile land which they never really used. Instead they used the river for fishing, transportation, etc.

Artistic

The people of Norte Chico mainly expressed their artistic side through building structures and infrastructures such as pyramids, plazas, apartments, etc. There's little evidence of visual art, but they are known for their impressive music.

Intellectual

They did not develop writing which made it extremely difficult to learn anything. Rather than learning more education things, they were more focused on learning survival skills and how to achieve other tasks that are required to support themselves and their families.

Social

They had a form of hierarchy economic wise. The elite had the majority of control over the economic industries. They communicated through quipu, communication through rope/string because the did not have a writing system.

Religious

One of the main gods they believed in, was the Staff God.

Economic

They partially relied on trading with others. Men domesticated animals and women traded goods. One of the main sources of food was fish. It has been assumed that they used dried anchovies as their currency. The real use of their currency was to make trading easier, rather than becoming extremely wealthy.

Religious Ceremonies

Religious ceremonies were believed to have taken place at giant ceremonial complexes such as pyramids or plazas. At these ceremonies, they used hallucinogenic plants, in order to communicate with the supernatural.

They believed their religious leaders had access to deities.

Political

They didn't have a specific leader, but it is believed that they pursued a theocratic government meaning power was mainly given to a god. Because their power was mainly put into the hands of their god, their power was based on religion. There was little evidence of warfare. They were a peaceful community and traded with others around them.
