What is ocean acidifcation

b) continued

Ocean resources are items which we get from the ocean. We people need these items from the ocean to survive and keep our diet balanced. Sometimes we get too much items from the ocean, like fish which can lead to devastation.

Ocean acidification is one of the top ocean issues today. Ocean acidification is happening because of the increased level of carbon dioxide (the air we breath out) in the atmosphere resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (feuls formed by natural processes).

We have items from the ocean like, oil (which people dig out of the ground under the ocean),seafood, salt (which is evaporated from salt water) and seaweed they are all ocean resources.

Spatial dimension - Currently water covers three-quarters of the Earth and a huge 80% of most life on Earth is found hiding behind its waves. In the deep ocean humans harvest alot of seafood such as tuna, mackeral, trevally and other pelagic fish. In closer to the shore humans gather more reef fish and shellfish to eat and survive.

The ocean supplies our Earth with around 70% of the Earth's oxygen for humans animals to survive. It also produces us many useful resources and drives the worlds climate so that we can all live.

The commercial fishing industry provides jobs for millions of people around the world and provides the world with fish to eat.

The issue with overfishing is the environmental impact it has on the oceans. New technological fishing methods has greatly increased the amount of fish caught commercially which is rapidly decreasing global fish stocks and disrupting the ecosystems of the sea.

Another issue is mining as it has a negative impact on plants and animals that live on the ocean floor. The oil drilled from the ocean floor is used to fuel our cars and machinery. Regrettably the drilling for oil unsettles the sea bed destroying ocean ecosystems. Oils spills are disasterous to many creatures that live in or are reliant of seas resources. Many seabirds get weighed down and drown or become poisened from the oil and die

Ecological dimension - People's interaction between themselves and the ocean is that the ocean provides us humans with many resources, us people are supposed to take care of the ocean.

Unfortunately we have over used almost all of the many ocean resources. Overfishing is a very big problem doing with that including ocean acidifcation.

Ocean acidification is one of the largest threats to our ocean today causing main families of coral to die aswell as other sea animals.

Did you also know that most fishermen hunt the most important predators like sharks for their fins? Almost 100 million sharks are killed each year. What they do with sharks is they catch the sharks, cut off the fins and throw the shark back in the water. I think this is a huge waste of ocean resources.

Use of Ocean Resources

what can people change to stop over using ocean resources.

Maybe they could try to reduce the number of fish being over used people can try to limit themselves with fishing and take in mind that if they fish too much fish, there will be none left in future generations.

What are some ocean resources and their uses?

People could try to stop using those fishing nets which they drag along the sea too much. Because it could also catch other marine animals they dont want to catch like dolphips, turtles and jellyfish.

Salt - Salt is mostly used on seafood and other food.

Oils - People usually extract lots of oil from those huge oil farms on water.

Food - People need to collect fish from the ocean as a meal to eat and keep our nutrion balanced.

Water - The world has over 70% water on the entre planet.

Another problem with our oceans

d) Describe the actions of individuals, groups and governments in relation to the issue.

Us humans pollute the earth too much. Where does the waste go to? The ocean. There is 2 major problems, the sea creatures e.g turtles can swallow the rubbish and plastic bags thinking the rubbish is jellyfish. Another problem is that all the pollution is affecting our ozone layer, with a hole in our ozone layer, the sun is shining right down onto antartica. If antartica melts some ocean creatures will lose their habitat the water will become warmer and the oceans will rise up almost 20m - 30m.

Governments have made laws to limit the legal amount of fish that are allowed to be caught in certain areas each day. No fishing zones have been marked so that fish can breed in peace and grow peacefully in that area. Today there is much more monitoring equipment and installations set up to make sure the number of fish doesnt go down.

Greenpeace have rallied and acted in other ways to stop the ocean being overfished.
