Moving right along:

Now onto the explanation:

DFTD

Fast Facts cont. :

Fast Facts:

  • Also known as a Tasmanaian Devil

Originating in Australia

Diet: Carnivore

Type: Marsupial Mammal

Protection status:Endangered

Did you know? When confronted, a Tasmanian devil will often yawn at its tormentor as if pretending to be unbothered by the threat.

But the saddest part is that:

There is currently no cure for it.

There a couple discoveries like:

  • Scientists have determined how devil facial tumor disease manages to ‘turn off’ elements of the iconic marsupial’s immune system.
  • A recent pilot study, which investigated a novel plant molecule with anticancer properties has shown some results for the localized treatment of tumors.

The reason why there are so many of these marsupials affected is:

They bite each other, simple as that.

The tumor:

starts to develop in the face, which means only a fatal outcome.

What is the cancer anyhow?

Because of the tumors on their face, they gradually die since they can't eat so its only choice is to starve to death.

This cancer began as a Shwann cell, a type of cell that wraps around and insulates nerve cells outside the brain but somehow it evolved into a parasitic facial tumor, with the ability to spread quickly from one devil to another.

The Tasmanian Devil population is declining by an estimated 50%...

Why, might you ask?

Because of a cancer that acts like a contagious disease called DFTD

Where do you think the cancer usually hits?
