Huckleberry Finn

Man Vs Self

By : Jason feliciano, Hector Velez, Brandon Heath and Jahina Eddington

Example # 1

"The same second I see a young girl coming on the run… pistol barrel comes down slow and steady to a level – both barrels cocked… bang goes the first shot, and he staggers back, clawing the air – bang goes the second shot and he tumbles backwards."

This shows man vs self col. Sherburn kills his own son because he falls in love with the daughter of the wrong family. The fact that the feud got to that is the real conflict of man vs self. Huck asks Buck of the feud started and Buck could tell him because he didn’t now but he was willing to kill for the feud. Just think about that you are fighting but you don't now why.

Modern connection: Guilt

In the movie American Sniper, the main character Chris Kyle is in Iraq and in the scene you just saw he has to shoot a little boy. He also goes through other problems where he has to make rash decision to protect his fellow soldiers. Chris unfortunately comes back to the states with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Now Huck Finn doesn't go to war or have PTSD but does witness his friend Buck being shot and killed and because of that he blames himself for it just like Chris blames himself for the deaths of some of the soldiers and the kid.

Example #2

Don't you ask me no questions about it, please. You'll take it -- won't you?"

He says"Well, I'm puzzled. Is something the matter?"

"Please take it," says I, "and don't ask me nothing -- then I won't have to tell no lies."

He studied a while, and then he says"Oho-o! I think I see. You want to SELL all your property to me -- not give it. That's the correct idea."

This shows man vs self in the aspect of addiction because it's an inner battle that the person goes through that can lead to things like abusing your child and taking money from them. Just like this quote implies Huck's pap has been taking his money and beating him if he lies and says he doesn't have it leading Huck to get rid of the money so he doesn't have to lie any more.

Modern connection: Addiction

The article I found on addicts connects to internal conflict. addicts suffer a lot and some want to change their ways for their future or someone important in their life. This causes the addicts to regret most of the choices they made especially after facing some consequences. Another reason why it’s an internal conflict is because those people need the drug and the body asks for drugs, without the drugs the body would function correctly.

Addiction connects to Huckleberry Finn because Huck's father is addicted to alcohol. He tries to take money from his son to buy more alcohol for himself which connects to a all addicts trying to get money from people on the streets to fuel their addiction. Huck meeting up with his old friend, Tom, and going back to his old ways also connects to addicts because they end up with their bad habits due to the bad environment they are around.

Example #3

" I judged I ought to told her father about that paper and the curious way she acted, and then maybe he would a locked her up, and this awful mess wouldn't ever happened.

.....I crept along down the river bank a piece, and found the two bodies laying in the edge of the water, and tugged at them till I got them ashore; then I covered up their faces, and got away as quick as I could. I cried a little when I was covering up Buck's face, for he was mighty good to me."

this quote show the relationship between Buck and Huck and that his death really effected Huck to the fact that he blames himself for his death and cries over him. Huck goes and says that if he hadn't of helped Sophia no one would have died and instead of blaming the Shepherdson's the ones who actually killed buck he takes the guilt it on as his own so much so that he has nightmares about it.

Modern connection: Guilt

In the book Huck is faced with self-guilt over his friend Buck ,like Captain America's self-guilt over is best friend Bucky's death. while huck feels like if he hadn't helped Sophia then buck wouldn't be dead .Captain America felt that because he couldn't save bucky's life that his death is on his hands . what both of these characters have in common is that both of these main character felt like they were the cause of their friends death and carry it thought out the rest of their journeys
