The four journey's

According to Jenny and her Grandmother

The marching band Whirligig, Brent made in Miami that the Miami man saw

According to Brent

The whirligig Jenny meets with her Grandmother.

The last Whirligig Brent makes in Weeksboro Maine. The one Steph and Alexandra encounter.

“Somebody I don’t know who said there shouldn’t be laughter after Auschwitz, That nobody could ever want to laugh again after the things that happened there…pg 114… But I can also tell you that all those that died would want us to have a life with laughing. Not sad all the time… People are not all Hitler, people are very good also, like the one who made this wind toy to give happiness to everyone who pass.” In this case we learn more about life through despair. We learn about happiness through despair. Because of tragic events we can learn how to live our lives to make them better. Connecting to Auschwitz, they went through a horrible, tragic, event. But Jenny’s Grandmother says that they would want us to live a nice life, that they don’t want us to go through the same emotions that they would’ve had to go through. It’s like, as life goes one we conquer events that are horrible where we learn how to make them not, and we have to go through these times, which sucks, but they teach us new idea about life and how to act upon them.

"He discovered as well that a new view lay before his mind's eyes."-pg.132. Brent killed Lea and went through despair. But he went on a journey because of this and changed lives of others and learnt new ideas and knowledge about the world on this journey. So obviously we can see that he learnt more about life through despair. He went through a hard time but in the end he was happy because of the effect he had on others. . Through despair we learn how to be happy. If we were happy all the time, life wouldn’t actually be happy, it would be normal and nothing would happen. If there is despair in the world along with happiness, we can learn how to be happy through tragic events that happen in our lives. “There won’t be a rainbow without the rain.”

The Whirligig Tony encountered while camping with his mom

Connections

Text to Self: My dad recently went through a hard medical time. i never have seen him like that and i didn't have hope that he would get better. But I did learn a lot about life during this time. Like watching a family go through something like this is hard. That sometimes secrets and meant to be secrets. I also learnt I am going to enjoy the happy moments with my dad because of what we're going through. Btw he's all good.

Text to World: “When I despair, I remember that all

through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

― Mahatma Gandhi

Ghandi even says that even though we go through despair in the end we are brought happiness. We just have to get through the hard times and maybe learn a thing or two along the way

Miami Man

Tony

Conclusion

"Peace is hard to find. The pope is always asking for peace." Pg. 55. The man has had personal, political, and cultural conflicts. He has gone through quite the life, living in a horrid time where there was a bombing and then moved to Miami where he was bullied for not speaking English. Later he worked in restaurant where he met his wife and they had a baby girl. Later though she died when she was one. They had another child a boy, but the wife was super cautious and her parents moved in and life was chaotic for the Miami man. One day he went for a drive and wanted some peace and to see a shearwater bird that seemed solitary he wanted to be like it (metaphorically.) He got on a boat and saw the bird but then realised that the bird travelled in groups and they were always fighting and he realised if people are in groups there will always be chaos and fighting. But then he sees the marching band whirligig and realises if people work together they can create good music. If him and his family work together well in a group he will receive the peace he wants.

Tony is starting 5th grade and writing in his journal but he doesn't really care to impress his new teacher. He thinks back to his summer and what happened. Tony is adopted from Korea and his mom expects lots from his and to always be practising his violin. "But to my mother I'm not average. I'm Korean. I can do anything, if I apply myself."- pg. 78. When they go camping in the summer they encounter a Whirligig. The whirligig represented perfection in Tony’s mom’s eyes. That he should always be practising like the angel practising her harp."Look how she practices all the time, Anthony. A musician has to be dedicated." pg.80. This just made Tony start to slack off which brought him, his mom, and his teacher into a conversation about balance in life between practise and perfection and relaxing and what is important to Tony. "He told us the Chinese saying, about how rest gives us strength to activity."-pg.84. He then quit violin and had a better relationship with his mom and realised his summer was good after all.

INQUIRY

Steph

Do we learn more about life through happiness or despair?

Jenny

We learn more about life through despair

The four other characters all were influenced by the whirligigs in a good way, which is interesting

The themes in the book are all very relatable and everyone goes through at least one of them once in their life.

Steph represents science and logic in life unlike her best friend Alexandra. Steph doesn't care about her appearance, she is really smart and mocks the way her best friend Alexandra tries this guided imagery to get Steph to imagine a life with boys. They do this in front of the last whirligig Brent made because Alexandra believes it will help. When Steph opens her eyes there is a little boy who in three years is the little brother to her boyfriend. Steph doesn't believe in the whirligig but goes back to it to clean it up and keep it in its good condition. This story touches on the theme of unseen forces," You can't see the wind, but look what it can do. It's invisible but powerful. Like thoughts." - Pg.26. "It's like electricity - an invisible power that people didn't know for centuries. If you learn to use your thoughts, you can do all kinds of things." - Pg. 26. Alexandra says this to support her idea of the guided imagery.

In this chapter Jenny and her grandmother go on a drive because her grandmother is going to die. Jenny drives her to all her Grandma's favourite places in the city, including the building with the whale and mermaid whirligig. Her grandmother explains how people believe there shouldn't be laughter after Auschwitz but she explains that not all people are bad and that the people who suffered in the camps would want us to live our lives with laughter. “Somebody I don’t know who said there shouldn’t be laughter after Auschwitz, That nobody could ever want to laugh again after the things that happened there…pg 114… But I can also tell you that all those that died want what we should have a life with laughing. Not sad all the time… People are not all Hitler, people are very good also." pg. 133. The whirligig represents happiness and it brought joy to Jenny's grandmother which is what Mrs. Zamora wanted the whirligigs to do when Brent first created them. This event talks about the theme of balance between laughter and seriousness in life. Jenny needs to take things lighter and not be so serious and always worried about life which she learns how to do in her Grandma's last days.

I chose this photo to represent this question because this person is obvisiouly crying but her eyes are open containing the world in them and the colours represent hope and happiness in the future, which represents the question and answer well.

The Whirligig: Final Assignment

This quote relates to the theme about self identity and the journey. In the beginning of the book Brent only cares about what he owns, how he looks and to get in with the popular people. But as we go along in the book, Brent starts to find himself and moves on from the 'old Brent' and into his 'new life.'

This quote relates to the message of the book about interconnectedness. Brent is connected to each of the other characters in the future. Because of the crime he commited he birthed other people's future and how they have an outlook on their lives. This quote explains how every choice you make can affect someone else's life.

This quotes relates to the theme about balance in life. It talks about having balance between two different things. The same goes for Tony, where he needed a balance between serious activities (violin) and when he needed to just hang out. Also relates to the chapter with Jenny, about how we learn to have balance between the serious events in our lives and when to have fun. Which Jenny learns through her Grandma.
