Ancient China's Education System

What was an educational advance in ancient China?

How were the Chinese educated during the Xia Dynasty ?

Why was education important to ancient China?

The invention of paper was a great advance in school and education. This paper was created by hemp waste in water, washed, soaked, and beaten with a mallet, creating a paper mold. With paper everything became much easier. Rather than an oral culture their culture was changed to a literature culture. It made art and writing easier at school. Also with the invention of paper, books changed from scrolls of silk to paper.

Bibliography

During the late Xia Dynasty the Chinese were taught through a teaching of Confucianism which was taught during the Spring, Autumn, and Warring States periods. The two main focuses of Confucianism education was to teach social behavior and political teachings. Social behavior taught men to act and behave properly in society. Political teachings taught men the art of government. This form of education was very important to China in the Xia Dynasty.

What was an average day of school like in Ancient China?

Most kids were not able to attend school unless you were a boy and you were not needed to work for your father. Then you would go to school every day, even weekends starting when you were six years old. A school day lasted from 6:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. While at school you would learn to write essays and poetry, paint pictures, read, write, and you would memorize the Confucianism philosophy. If you were very smart you would attend special gifted programs or stay in school until you were sixteen or seventeen.

How is education alike and different from ancient China and modern day China?

One way education is different between the two time periods is in modern day China education is required from age six to fifteen unlike in ancient China. One reason the two time periods are alike is at both times there were fewer girls attending school then boys. It is estimated that in 2020 there will be 30 million more boys attending school in China than girls. They are also alike because even since ancient times education has always been a major importance to the Chinese.
