Responsible caring II.46 "Use a procedure subjecting to pain... only if an alternative procedure is unavailable." Researchers could have conducted this experiment on addicts who were willing to take part in it, instead of conducting it on innocent
animals who couldn't
decide for themselves
if they wanted to take
part in it.
Responsible caring II.17. "Not carry out any scientific or professional activity unless the probable benefit is proportionately greater than the risk involved"
The reason of simply "watching the effects of drugs on animals" is not a good enough reason to put animals through the torture and pain that they went through.
Respect for the Dignity of Persons I.20: Informed consent: The monkey's should have had a representative to speak on their behalf. They can not talk or communicate like us humans can, thus they were not able to decide for themselves if they wanted to take part in the experiment.
Responsible caring: II.2 "Avoid doing harm to clients, research participants, etc". The monkey's severely injured themselves but researchers still continued the experiment.

The monkey drug trials: In 1969, researchers by the name's of C. R. Schuster and T. Thompson designed an experiment to help understand the effects of drugs and alcohol abuse. Monkey's and rats were trained for self-injection.
Analyzers gave the animals drugs such as; morphine, cocaine, codeine and amphetamines. and sometimes also alcohol.
After the monkey's would inject themselves with one or more drugs, analyzers would observe the monkey's behavior, and their side effects.
Monkey's that were injected with cocaine and morphine (in one dose) died after approximately two weeks.
Some side effects included: addiction, convolutions and hallucinations.
Some monkeys severely injured themselves while on the drugs. They would pull out hair from their
body, break their arms and break off their
fingers
It was unnecessary for the monkey's to be used at test subjects. There was no reason for analyzer's to use the monkey's because animals do not experiment with drugs on their own. The experiment could have been conducted on current addicts. If they offered money for it, it may draw people to sign up for it to help gain information on drug addiction. It would also have been beneficial if analyzer's based their research off of hospital records from former or current drug users, instead of using innocent animals to take part in the experiment. The results should not be used because animals can experience different side effects than us humans can.
