In both characters, Hamlet and Dorian Gray, instinct as a guide is a common theme. Both are examples of people who act upon instinct without putting in the thought of how it may affect others or their own future. Hamlet acts upon his instinct when he meets the ghost of his father and decides to pretend to act mad, without considering whether the ghost is real or not. He violently kills Polonius without looking behind the curtain and this prompts Claudius and Laertes to plot their revenge. Dorian on the other hand, breaks off his engagement with Sibyl without considering her feelings, and kills Basil without considering if what Basil had to say was of any value to him. His instincts told him to wreck the painting that reflected his soul. Dorian and Hamlets neglect to think before they act, eventually results in both of their deaths.
