The Election of Hayes resulted in the ending of Reconstruction, through The Compromise of 1877. This resulted in as close to a return to antebellum society as was posssible. This included the rise to power of the KKK and Sharecropping. Ostensibly sacraficed the equality and saftey of southern blacks. Also during Hayes there were a number of Class and Ethnic Clashes. He called in federal troops to stop a few of these incidents which brought those involved a great deal of support,
Reformed the the Spoils system despite his record of cronysim, prosecuting several fraud cases and giving his former Stalwart compatriots the cold shoulder. Also gave the Republican party a taste for reform.
Garfield Was shot in the back by a mentally deranged hopefull member of the opposing party not long after his inauguration, in a Washington railroad station.

A long depression followed the panic of 1873 lasting well into Hayes' presidency, during which the laboring class, especially railroad workers, were hit extraordinarily hard. The cutting of their salaries by ten percent resulted in a strike that Hayes called federal troops in to stop. Work stoppages all over the country resulted. In the end it revealed the weaknesses of the working classes and such. Chinese American and Irish American Immigrants continued to be poor working in the most menial of jobs.
The End of Reconstruction also returned significant power to the southern states, politically. It also resulted in the passage of the Jim Crow laws and the Military control of the south. Southern States enacted laws that essententially resulted in the full scale dis enfranchisement of Blacks under Hayes.
Garfield's death had one positive outcome; it shocked politicians into reforming the spoils system. The instrument of this reform was Chester Arthur,
