Distal Biceps Tendon Injury

Muscles Involved In Volleyball

Biceps Brachii

2 Core Volleyball Skills Video

Analysis of 2 core volleyball skills found at:

At one point or another you will use all muscles in the body while playing volleyball.

This is one of the most common bicep injuries.

It commonalty occurs in the dominate arm of a middle aged person

It can be either a partial or complete ruptures

Injury to the biceps at the elbow end usually occur when the elbow is forced straight against resistance.

Symptoms can include but are not limited to;

Pain at the front of the elbow

Sometimes people can hear a pop in the area

If only a partial tear pain will subside, if left untreated a chronic distal biceps rupture is usually not painful

There also may be bruising in the area

If completely ruptured, the tendon can retract toward the shoulder causing a noticeable rounded mass

Some weakness will result in both flexion and supination, or rotation of the forearm although other muscles will compensate

There are several treatment options;

Non operative focuses on reducing the pain and maintaining full motion of the elbow

Surgical options include repairing the tendon at its insertion site

Rehabilitation

Imbolized for a few weeks

Two months of gentle movements after imbolization

Light lifting and strenghening

Return to ativities after 4 - 5 months

The bicep if found in the upper arm. It runs from just below the shoulder joint to the area just below the elbow.

The tendons that attach to the bicep at the shoulder are called prozimal biceps tendons these are in two places

The tendons that attach the biceps to the radius and the ulner are called the distal bicep tendons.

The bicep helps to control three different functions; the shoulder function, the elbow function and the forearm function. The bicep is involved in the shoulder flexion (raising the arm). Although the bicep is not the main muscle it is a stabilizing muscle for support. The bicep is the main agonist in elbow flextion. The triceps are the antagonist muscle

that allows the elbow flexion.

The biceps role in the forearm function is working alone side

other muscle to allow for supination (rotating forearm so

that you are palms up).

Hamstrings Calf Biceps Triceps Deltoids Rectus Abdominis

Micah is one of the best volleyball setters in the olympics. Before he sets the ball he is typically facing the way he is going to set. He moves his feet and positions himself directly under the ball. He bends his knees and his calf and hamstring muscles contract to build up power. His arms are bent above his head with hands together and fingers shaped like a diamond. As the ball comes down he pushes off the ground and the power that was built up in the legs propels him up towards the ball. His hands cradle the ball and the biceps, triceps, deltoids and forearm muscles work together to extend the arms with enough force to send the ball high in the air to who ever is going to spike the ball. The fingers extend rapidly as well to convey the force up into the ball. The wrist works with the fingers to control the direction of the ball. With a flick of the wrist the ball flies over behind his head to the spiker who is waiting.

For that move to work the fingers have to point in the direction needed.

Micah stands with his body facing slightly towards the which he is using to hit. He uses his biceps to curl the arm out and flick the ball up. His tricep is the antagonist muscle allowing the arm to curls. The other arm is moving back and raising up preparing to hit the ball, the trapezius contracts building force. The ball flies up just past the height of the serving arm at full extension. As the are raises up he leans forward onto the front foot. His core muscles come into play allowing him to stay up right. The hitting arm comes through

and connects with the ball at the peak. This motion force comes from the bicep and triceps as the antagonist muscle allowing arm to stay raised. As the arm comes through it doesn't cross the body the fingers stay extended controlled by the brachioradialis muscle with the antagonist, flexor carpi

ulnaris muscle, holding the arm up. The finished angle of the

arm should be extended out towards where you aimed.

Reasons For Training These Muscles

Hamstrings:

Upper Arm. (2015). [image] Available at: https://noexcuseshealth.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/upper-arm-muscles.jpg [Accessed 5 Sep. 2015].

The hamstrings are often left out of training although they have they have two major functions that help in volleyball; knee flexion and hip extension. The hamstrings work with the other muscles in the posterior chain to help to control the hip. The hip is activated when making bursts of forward movements such as sprinting or jumping.

Calf:

The calf muscle is responsible for the spectacular leaps volleyball players do when spiking or blocking for example. By training the calf muscle and building power in the you can learn to jump higher and with more strengh.

Transverse Abdominis:

Training of the core is essential to become a good volleyball player. By training the inner core essentially you are training the diaphragm. This helps to build strength in the stomach area and improve your breathing. By learning to be deep breathers (ie. use the diaphragm)

Deltoids:

The biceps, deltoids and triceps all work together to give the arm power and strength.

Professional volleyball players have worked hard on their arm muscles that allows them to have powerful hits and spikes.

Working on these muscle will allowed you to gain that spike that is almost impossible for your opponent to hit back
