  • Both are methods that are needed while driving

  • Hazards could be avoided
  • Always predict outcomes

The IPDE process is a step by step method of being a defensive driver and visualizing perceptions in traffic.

  • Identify : relates to the driver's visual of IDENTIFYING real and potential hazards,

Ex: spotting an oncoming vehicle in your lane of travel, a child playing near the roadway, respectively looking ahead 20-30 seconds

  • Predict : what may happen should you encounter a real or potential hazard

Ex: an oncoming vehicle may drift into your lane of travel, PREDICT whether the oncoming car will continue toward your vehicle.

  • Decide: DECIDING on what action you shall take rather it being accelerating, braking, steering etc. to avoid a crash.
  • Execute: to carry out your decided action plan

Smith System

While driving the motor vehicle can attend to have many dangers surrounding you which is your responsibility to be aware of. There are 5 major keys for this method. Which are:

1. Aim high in Steering

2. Make sure you see the big picture, and surroundings.

3. Always keep your eyes moving

4. ALWAYS at all times on your travel have an out

5. Make sure other drivers can see you , do not be in their blind spots.
