Therapists treating these pathologies provide a variety of appropriate intervention strategies, of which a few may include:

Wound Dressing

Manual Therapy - massage for lymphatic drainage and pain reduction, range of motion stretching

Electrical Stimulation

Fitting/ordering of adaptive, assistive, or protective equipment

Strengthening exercise

Patient education on current condition, risk factors, and plan of care

Who can practice Integumentary PT?

Classes at Northeastern

Education requirements are basically the same as a general DPT.

What classes included in your curriculum prepare you for working in this field?

· Anatomy and Physiology (year 2)

· Gross Anatomy (year3)

· Integumentary systems and advanced modalities (year 4)

non specialists must still have knowledge of the field in order to be able to work with patients that may have these needs

Specialists will have done grad work in the integumentary field

Who needs Integumentary PT?

Starting salary is around $65,000

The typical client is someone suffering from wounds, burns, skin ulcers, traumatic injuries, scars or abscess.

Integumentary physical therapists can work in both inpatient and outpatient facilities

The need for integumentary PT is consistent and should not necessarily increase or decrease in the near future. People will always get injured/burned and in will be in need of rehabilitation

Integumentary is the physical therapy of the skin and the treatment of the diseases and conditions associated with the integumentary system. Most common job is to help heal burns and promote tissue healing
