  • The train did not make any stops for its first 24 hours of travel.
  • Each cattle car housed 60 men in standing room only, prisoners were unable to move at all.
  • Following 3 weeks and almost 2000 miles of distance, the train enters Siberia.

Finally after a month on train, and 3000 miles of distance covered, the journey is complete. the prisoners arrive in eastern Siberia.

Seven prisoners escape from Camp 303. They head over the barb wire fence and escape to a near by forest.

  • Following his arrest in November 1939, Slavomir was brought to Moscow, Russia where he was housed in jail waiting to be heard in trial.

and food to the soldiers.

Slavomir is Tried

Following 4 trials in Moscow, Slavomir is moved to Lubyanka to face further trial under the U.S.S.R.

Slavomir Rawicz is a 24 year old man from Poland who is captued by the U.S.S.R on November 19, 1939 in Pinsk, Poland

Following the day of his sentencing, Slavomir as well as many other prsoner are loaded among cattle cars and begin train journey.

  • While facing strict judgement of a Soviet Officer, Slavomir is harshly punished with hot tar for doing no wrong.

Sentence

  • After weeks of trials, Slvomir is convicted of, for, “being a well-educated middle class Pole and an officer in the anti-Russian Polish Army, having a home near the Russian border, are therefore beyond any question of doubt a Polish spy and an enemy of the people of the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics.
  • Slavomir was sentenced to 25 years of forced labor.

The seven men meet a girl who was a prisoner of the Soviet Union and she joins them. After passing by Baikal Lake, the 8 members pass through the Trans Siberian Railway. All 8 remain healthy by use of the skills they have learned.

All 4 remaining men become mentally sick for a month. After which, all 4 go their separate ways. Slavomir return to the Polish Army and starts a new family.

  • The men, once they enter the forest, plan to travel 30 miles a day for the following weeks to come.
  • As the prisoners begin to make progress in their escape as they cross the Lena River.

Continued

The group of 8 has reached mongolia, a land that is hot and humid compared to Siberia. In ordeto remain healthy, they offer the mongolians help with their crops in return for food and shelter.

The 8 enter the Gobi Desert where it is extremely hot and dry. Kristiana and Makowski die in the Gobi desert.

The 6 remaining ex-prisoners enter China. After walking 210 miles a week, they reach Tibet, China.

Aware that China is the most civilized country they have passed throught, they become more aware of their attitudes and surroundings. One a day of rest, before they pass Lhasa, Marchinkovas dies in his sleep.

The remaining 5 pass through the Himalayans. Paluchowicz dies after he fell off the White Cliffs. As they reach India, Indian soldiers rescue them and bring them to safety.
