Good Country People
Mrs. Freeman and her family are tenant farmers for Mrs. Hopewell and her daughter Joy (Hulga). Hulga and her mother have a strained relationship because Mrs. Hopewell still thinks of Hulga as a child even though she is 32 years old. Hulga has an artificial leg because her real leg was shot off during a hunting accident when she was ten. One day a bible salesman comes to the Hopewell's home and stays for dinner. He seems to like Hulga and they go on a picnic the next day. They go up into the top of a barn and Hulga is convinced by Manley Pointer, the salesman, to show him where her fake leg connects. He takes off her leg and eventually leaves her, saying he steals many interesting objects this way and that she won't be able to find him again.
