The Quebec Act of 1774

What was the purpose of this document?

The purpose of the document was to make changes to the French rights mentioned in the Royal Proclamation of 1763. Also The Quebec Act replaces the Royal Proclamation Act.

What were the main points presented in this document?

  • Quebec became a larger area
  • Quebec was able to pass it's own laws (created by council of representatives]
  • Roman Catholics were allowed to participate in government
  • French Civil law was now practiced- this meant that the Seigneurial System was legal again

What is the significance of this document to Canadian history?

The significance of this document to Canadian history is that the British North Americans were unfair in treating the Acadians and Canadiens in the past. After realizing the mistakes they made, fair treatment given to the Canadiens will develop unity between the candiens and canadians. It's going to be a fine example of democracy.

What was the impact on the Canadiens?

The impact on the canadiens were that in the Quebec Act, more rights were given than there were in the Royal Proclamation of 1763. Due to this, Canadiens were very pleased with the changes in their rights. On the other hand British North Americans were not satisfied.
