Early on into the story, Delrita's parents are killed in a car accident. Because of this, they are to live with their aunt Queenie who disagrees with the way Punky lives. This causes many problems and also causes Delrita to try to isolate herself even more (theme). She gets to the point where she even isolated herself from Punky a little bit. Near the end of the book, Punky has a heart failure and only is left with days to live. On the night of Punky's death (Christmas night), he is surrounded by all of his family and states that he see's Delrita's parents. He then falls asleep and passes. Delrita goes on to live her life no longer in the shadows and makes an effort to make friends and live a happy life just
like Punky.
Delrita is an 8th grade girl who
purposely tries to hide herself from the world because she believes that she will be made fun of and ridiculed because of her uncle, Punky, has Down's Syndrome (theme). Punky is a man in his early 30's who has the heart and the mind of a child. He has his ways of doing things even if it includes "trading" one of his items for one on a shelf in a store.
It was displayed clearly that isolation is a very destructive force. It was because of Delrita's isolation that she did not have a good childhood. Also, if she had not isolated herself from Punky near the end of the story, she would have been able to spend more time with him before being informed that he only had days to live. Lucky, she was able to realize there is so much to get out there and do or be a part of to live a happy life.
In the story The Man Who Loved Clowns the main character, Delrita Jensen, faces self-isolation from those who would judge her and her uncle for the way he is.
