  • The Neuse has 3,880 total miles of streams and rivers.

How many counties are within the Neuse River Basin?

Wildlife in the Neuse:

About the Neuse River water pollution

There are 18 counties within the Neuse River Basin

  • The pollution sources comes from water quality in the estuary and high nitrogen levels from agricultural runoff. This affects the basin's health and it kills the fish and causes hypoxic conditions, which suffocates the fish. The decrease in fish beacause of this problem is also a part of the historical problems.

Improving the quality of the Neuse ecosystems:

What is the reason behind the Neuse's name?

The Neuse River Basin received its name by the early colonists by the American Indian tribe known as Neusiok.

The first step to improving the water quality in the Neuse is the North Carolina General Assembly requring a 30% reduction in nitrogen loading to the estuary.

Headwaters and Mouth of the Neuse River Basin:

Major tributaries in the Neuse River:

How many total square miles is the Neuse River Basin?

  • The Neuse River Basin has 6,235 total square miles.

Commercial Value of the Neuse:

The Neuse's boundaries are located entirely within the state. The Neuse begins northwest of Durham N.C in a 10-acre farm pond, which is the headwaters of the Eno. It feeds in Falls Lake, which is locate don the north side of Raleigh. Here, it is a freshwater river. Then it flows south of east towards the Pamlico Sound. It becomes a brackish estuary upstream from New Bern. Here, it is wider and affected by wind driven currents and salt water wedges that move upstream from the Pamlico Sound. The lower Neuse estuary starts around Flanners Beach.
