Wait, What's a zoo?

  • Zoo is short for "Zoological Park"
  • Zoos have been around for thousands of years, modern zoos (what we know a zoo is like today) first started coming around during the enlightenment period.

Claim

We love zoos why ban them what are you thinking?

Also, most animals in zoos can eat you.......

My claim is plain and simple, to ban all zoos and aquariums, (save your gasps for the end of the presentation please)

  • A man was killed by a tiger after a flood had allowed many animals to escape a zoo in Tbilisi.
  • In 2007, a tiger at a zoo in San Francisco attacked three men, mauling two and killing the other.
  • There was also an incident in 2009 of a woman being injured by a polar bear in Berlin.
  • Another incident an elephant accidentally killed its keeper.
  • There are a lot of messed up things happening to the animals, which are held in captivity in zoos.
  • Following this slide will be a number of examples which will surprise you.

Chimpanzees

But don't zoos save endangered species?

  • Um no, not really
  • They may be able to keep animals alive within the zoo but:
  • "The odds of animals such as tigers and wolves surviving freedom are only 33 percent, according to a team of researchers from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. (1)"
  • Zoos aren't giving endangered species as much funding as the animals that are more popular at the zoo
  • and there are plenty more reasons I can't fit in the slide from my paper.
  • You may see a cute and cuddly monkey, but in reality it has been proven that chimpanzees literally go insane from being kept in captivity.
  • They aren't able to roam like they want, they aren't given the proper social surroundings when being stuck with the same group of chimpanzees in a zoo.
  • This stresses them out; causing bizarre behaviors such as eating their own feces, self mutilation, and repetitive rocking.

Marius the Giraffe

  • Marius the giraffe made me extremely upset because giraffes are my favorite animal.
  • Marius was kept at the Copenhagen Zoo, then they discovered he wasn't genetically able to mate with the other giraffes in the breeding program
  • The zoo then found him useless, so they did a public dissection to "educate the people" of his dead body after killing him.
  • They then chopped the giraffe up and fed it to the lions in the zoo.
