Lars and the real girl

Symptoms: DSM-V Criteria

A. The presence of one (or more) delusions with a duration of 1 month or longer.

B. Criterion A for schizophrenia has never been met.

C. Apart from the impact of the delusion(s) or its ramifications, functioning is not markedly impaired, and behavior is not obviously bizarre or odd.

D. If manic or major depressive episodes have occurred, these have been brief relative to the duration of the delusional periods.

E. The disturbance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition and is not better explained by another mental disorder, such as body dysmorphic disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  • firmly held belief regardless of evidence to the contrary

Treatment

Etiology/Causes

  • Delusional disorder can be very difficult to treat in part because its sufferers often have poor insight and do not recognize that a psychiatric problem exists.
  • Treatment for delusional disorder most often includes medication and psychotherapy
  • Antipsychotic medicines are the primary treatment for delusional disorder.

Genetic, Biological, & Environmental Factors

  • Evidence suggests that delusional disorder can be triggered by stress.
  • Alcohol and drug abuse also might contribute to the condition.

Types of Delusions

  • Non-Bizarre:

Delusions that aren’t out of the realm of possibilities:

  • Erotomanic: belief is in love with them
  • Grandiose: Belief of inflated self worth
  • Jealous: belief that significant other is cheating
  • Persecutory: belief that they are being treated maliciously
  • Somatic: belief of physical defect or general illness
  • Mixed: more than one type of delusion
  • Unspecified: doesn't fall into specific

category

Mixed Type:

Delusions of more than one type (e.g., erotomanic, grandiose, persecutory, somatic) in which no one theme predominates.

  • Erotomanic:

A delusion that another person, usually of higher status, is in love with the individual.

  • Unspecified

Mood-Congruent delusion- Delusion that directly stwm from a persons' mood such as depression or mania

Mood-neutral delusion- is a false belief that isnt directly related to a person's emotional state.
