Khat

Who uses Khat?

Legal or Illegal?

How it is Used

What is Khat?

What are Some Dangers?

The Main Question

My guiding question is what are the dangers of using Khat and who uses it and where in the world?

Khat is used by people in East Africa areas. They use it to forget about problems or to elevate there mood. In Somalia, civilians and military both use this drug. When the people don't get enough in a shipment, it could spark a war against these 2 places.

It is used by wrapping a bunch of the Khat leaves with a large leaf and then chewing or eating it out of the leaf holding it. Higher end people have a metal stick to help push up the Khat from the leaf holding them.

Khat is a Herbal Stimulant and is used for people that want to never have problems with hunger again because this plant that grows in the ground reduces hunger tremendously and throws you into a hallucinogenic trip (where your brain is making things up that aren't really happening) making you disoriented and also act out. Also it is a slow-growing tree that can be up to 10 metres tall and only 6 centimetres in width.

Khat has many dangers and negative effects such as

Short Term Long Term

- Increased heart rate - Death

- Hyperactivity - Bleeding from brain

- Memory loss - Nightmares for weeks

- Increased blood pressure - Oral cancer

- Confidence - Depression

- Hallucination - Stroke from Artery

- Dizziness clogging

Khat is considered legal in Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Yemen. All of these are countries of Africa except for Yemen which is on the edge of Asia. On the other hand it is a banned substance in Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, USA, and most other countries.

Physical Appearance

Khat is made by kids and teenagers between the ages of 9 and 18 years old. And is made always in small straw huts with tables filled with freshly cut Khat. In my opinion it is probably the worst conditions to work in.

In 2010 California Police found 997.8 lbs. of Khat which is $315,000 USD or $410,000 CAD.

This is a fairly cheap compared to Marijuana which would cost about $1.3 million.

You would be able to tell it someone has been chewing on Khat from their teeth all the way to their hands. Here are some images of the things that Khat would do to you.

( Not included: Green fingertips/toes, sometimes green teeth or yellow and black)
