When?

Battlestar Galactica was made following the huge success of the 1977 star wars film and the next year, 1978 twentieth Century Fox took legal action against Universal Studios for infringement of copyright laws.

Who?

Twentieth Century Fox, the creators of Star Wars, sued Universal Studios, the creators of Battlestar Galactica .

By: Bailey Addington & Scott Kidd

Why?

Twentieth Century Fox alleged that Battlestar Galactica infringed on copyright created by Star Wars. At issue was whether or not Battlestar’s characters, plot lines, technology, etc. were copied from Star Wars. For example, Twentieth Century Fox claimed that Battlestar’s use of a “friendly robot,” who sides with democratic forces and is harmed by a totalitarian enemy, constituted copyright infringement.

What?

40 years ago in a courtroom not so far away there was a case between Star Wars vs Battlestar Galactica over copyright laws.

The case was remanded and reportedly settled before further action took place. By that time Battlestar Galactica had already been canceled.

Where?

Universal moved for summary judgement but because the films were so dissimilar that no reasonable jury could find infringements. The Central District of California agreed and granted summary judgement. They decided that the works were only similar on the most general levels such as "good vs evil in space". But the Ninth Circuit disagreed and said the film "Does in fact raise genuine issues of material fact as to whether only the star wars or the expression of the idea was copied."
