But first a little review......
Can you define work?
Work means to move an object with force.
I know you know this.......
Why do we use simple machines?
to make work easier
Do you know how machines give us a mechanical advantage?
Machines give us a mechanical advantage
by chaning the amount, speed and direction of the
force.
An inclined is a sloped surface such as ramp.
An inclined plane lets you move something to a higher level more easier then you could lift it.
An inclined plane give you a mechanical
advantage because you use less effort force to raise an object.
Examples of incline planes are:
stairs
wheelchair ramps
ladders
A wedge works when you push on its thickest part. Most wedges have handles to make them
easier to use.
A thin wedge needs less
effort force to cut then
a thick wedge does.
There are two types of wedges
Most wedges are made up of two inclined
planes and are used to split apart objects:
axe, teeth and nail
Other wedges are made up of one inclined
plane and are used to lift or stop objects:
doorstop
A screw holds objects
together.
When the threads on a screw
are close together it take less
effort force to put the screw in the
wood - because the inclinded plane is
longer.....but
we must turn the screw more
times to drive it into the wood.
Examples of screws are:
light bulb
jar
propellers
2000 years ago, a mathematician named Archimedes invented
a screw that could be used to lift water.
What is an inclined plane?
The less sloped the incline plane is, the less force you need to raise the object.
The disadvantage is you must move the object a greater distance
Wedge: has a thick end
and a thin end; the thin
end is used to lift, hold
or push objects apart.
The wedge was one of
the earlies simple machines
used.
Do you know what these wedges were?
Screw: an inclined plane
wrapped around a central core.
