Why is Human Cloning illegal?

Human Cloning Laws

This issue was first mentioned by a California legislature in 1997 where reproductive cloning or cloning to initiate a pregnancy was banned.

States that disallow reproductive cloning: Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Virginia.

Louisiana also prohibited cloning but it expired in July 2003!

What is human cloning?

Human cloning refers to the recreation of a person by taking their DNA and recreating a carbon copy. This does not refer to the natural cloning that can occur with a human cell in mitosis to create twins. This topic has become controversial because technology has come to a point where we may be able to clone but many question the sensitive morality of the subject.

But why would it be illegal?

History of Cloning

  • Cloning started in the early 1800s
  • Cloning of plants has been a common practice of mankind for hundreds of years
  • Cloning of animal even has a long history date back to the 1960's
  • Human cloning was not in the thought until the successful cloning of the first mammal, Dolly the sheep, in 1997.

Thank You!

Why would it be illegal

Ethical issues: The Catholic church believes that life can't be created by other people; only God can create life.

Moral issues: People think that clones might be mistreated since its not the original person.

Social issues: Society as a whole is not ready to accept cloned life. Many already opposed the animal cloning.

(As of now, human cloning is banned in the US but reproductive and therapeutic cloning research is a decision for the state.)
