The Roman Colosseum and Modern Stadiums

By Ashviny Kaur and Lizzy Morgan

How do modern stadiums compare to the Colosseum based on design, scale, and purpose?

What can the Colosseum teach us about Roman culture and values and the government and politics?

The Colosseum was free to all Roman citizens who wanted entertaining. It was described as "free bread and circus to Romans". Romans were probably very proud of their gladiators and animal keepers. The fact that this great building was built by Jewish slaves might be because of certain governmental restrictions on working.

The Colosseum had three basic column designs. But the Colosseum also had put a lot of effort into their detailing of the building. The stadiums now, like the SkyDome, have roofs that can be opened with just a touch of a button and are not very detailed, unlike the Colosseum. The Colosseum definetly weighed more than the biggest stadiums now, like the Strahov Stadium. Now, the Colosseum is known as a worldwide tourist attaction, while the stadiums are known for ball games.

Who builds and pays for modern stadiums?

Who built the Colosseum?

It might seem weird, but the Colosseum was actually built by 60,000 Jewish slaves! many people might have thought that it was built by Vespasian himself before knowing this.

Today's stadiums are paid by very rich people who own football and soccer teams. The stadiums are normally built by professional contractors and workers.

Additional notes on the Colosseum and modern stadiums

What was the Colosseum originally named?

It was originally named the Flavian ampitheater. Then, it got it's name changed to the Colosseum because of a large statue (colossus) of Nero placed in front of the Colosseum.

Over 400,000 people died in the 390 years it was open for entertainment.

Unbelievably the Ancient Romans would flood the Colosseum and have miniature ship and navel battles inside the Colosseum.

Stadiums now are home to many football and baseball teams worldwide.
