Encasement solutions to improve urban integration

Thematic Seminar on Integration of Waste Management Solutions into the Urban Décor of Heritage Areas
The waste management system in Porto Heritage City Centre is an integration of several diferent subsystems, in order to adapt to the urban structure particularities and unique characteristics

Replace as much surface bins as possible for underground systems
Overtime we have been working to improve the waste collection system
Knowing that underground bins are the best solution in terms of urban integration, storage capacity and operational eficiency...
In some collection points is wasn't possible to install underground bins and replace the surface ones
One of these cases is a colection poit located in a pathway to Ribeira, where a huge amount of people pass every day
Several problems regarding aesthetics due to the accumulation of dirt and waste outside the bins
Remove the collection point
Replace the surface bins for underground containers
The solution developed for this collection point was integrated in an urban rehabilitation project dedicated to a specific area of the Heritage City Centre
The project was developed in the scope of an Urban Rehabilitation Programme, partialy financed by the European Regional Development Found (ERDF), with a global budget of 31,5 M€
The project was promoted by the Urban Rehabilitation Society (Sociedade de Reabilitação Urbana - SRU) in colaboration with several entities
The Municipal Office for Urban Cleaning was responsible for the issues related with the waste management system
After studying the available options for the intervention in that collection point, we decided to go for an encasement solution
A metallic structure was built covering the bins so they were not visible from the sidewalk
The bins are now blended in the urban structure and have a minimal visual impact
The metallic structure is very neat and simple
The bins go unnoticed for those walking by
Even iif there's waste placed outside the bins it stays out of the sight
