Developmental Needs of a 3 Year Old!

Movement Milestones

One thing that is for certain with a three year old is that they are always on the move. Some movement milestones that should be met by now are walking up stairs while alternating feet. They should be able to kick and throw a ball. They should also be able to ride a tricycle, run and climb.

Cognitive

As well as language, a three year old will start producing many cognitive milestones. For example, they should be able to correctly name colors that are familiar to them. They should be able to understand the idea of same and different. They should be able to make up pretend stories and and fantasize with creativity. They should be able to understand the difference in time. For example, they should know when it is night time, morning and afternoon.

My classroom will help support developmental needs by letting children participate in activites like puzzles, building blocks, and activities that include movement while singing.

The age group I chose was three years old.

My Curriculum process includes lots of group activities. I feel children learn better by watching other children. Activities that include board games, reading board books and singing allows children to expand their vocabulary while also learning to work together.

Developmental delays can impact a child learning needs in so many ways. For example, if a child has a hard time communicating, they may not be able to tell you they don't understand the lesson. The way I would adapt my classroom in such a way is to make our activities group related. Being in a group can help a child adapt to the situation and get excited about participating. Another way to help children adapt in my classroom if they cannot grasp the task at hand, I will modify it. For example, if they have •Has difficulty understanding stories, I would use objects or flannel board pieces that represent characters or objects in the story. The child may make connections between the physical objects. Another example of how I would modify my curriculum to a child that is easily distracted when playing, I would let them play with manipulative toys such as puzzles, beads, and such—hand the pieces to the child one by one. Gradually increase the number of pieces the child has at one time.

children with speech delays can sometimes have problems communicating so if you communicate with them through books and show them what the words mean as well as how to say them, they can learn easier..

Milestones

There are many milestones a three year old should be able to do such as language, movement and cognitive. Some language milestones that should be able to be done are saying his/her name. A three year old should be able to speak 250-500 words, as well as answer simple questions. They should also be able to tell stories and speak in complete sentences.

By doing these things with your students, you can ensure they are getting what they need to expand their knowledge and vocabulary.
