Social Critics

  • Satire was heavily used in the 18th century
  • It's influenced many of the cartoonist, comedians, and late night TV show hosts
  • They use satire to make valid points about political and social issues
  • Political conflict between Charles and his brother James in 1685
  • Parliament forced James to abdicate his throne & his daughter Mary & her husband William took the throne known as the glorious revolution.
  • English Bill of Rights put specific limits on royal authority.
  • Mary died and William ruled alone.
  • William started wars with France.

Science & Society

  • Science has played a very important role in our society
  • It's lead to many medical discoveries which save lives everyday
  • It's solved many problems but it's also caused new ones

The Age of Reason

  • Known as the Enlightenment
  • Reason not faith to make sense of the world
  • The Scientific Method (Isaac Newton)
  • "The universe operated by logical principals that humans were capable of understanding"
  • John Locke was also apart of the Enlightenment.
  • Journalism was popular in this time period.

The House Of Hanover

  • Anne was the last monarch in the house of Stewart (16 kids)
  • Robert Walpole was the kings prime minister
  • William led the nation to victory over France in the 7 years war. (French & Indian war).

1660-1798

Start of the Restoration Period

-Coronation of Charles II in 1660 as he regained the throne

-A crowd of 10,000 watched the King

Sophisticated Society

-Post-Puritan rule

-Stuart Court of Charles set the tine for upper class social & political life

-modeled the sophistication after Louis XIV

-"Comedies of Manner" poked fun at the royal court

-John Drydan chartered the scientific organization known as Royal Society
