Earth

1. Why do you think scientists do not know very much about Pluto?

2. Why did scientists decide that Pluto is a dwarf planet?

3. Do you agree or disagree that Pluto is not a planet? Why or why not?

4. What are two characteristics of Pluto that make it neither terrestrial or gaseous?

5. What do you think New Horizons will discover about Pluto in 2015?

Terrestrial Planets

The terrestrial planets are:

  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars

Characteristics of a terrestrial planet:

  • solid, rocky surfaces
  • have a core made up of iron or other heavy metals
  • denser than gaseous planets
  • have a diverse landscape with craters, mountains and valleys

Questions and Links

1. What is another name for the gaseous planets?

2. What is the combined diameter of the gas planets?

3. What is the farthest planet from Earth? How far away is it? If a satellite can travel 432,000 miles in a day, how many days would it take you to get there? (Bonus question: Can you convert that to years? Hint: There are 365 days in a year.)

4.How much greater is the gravity on Jupiter? If you weigh 80 pounds on Earth, how much would you weigh on Jupiter? What if you were 160 pounds? What about your pet elephant that weighs 1 ton? (Hint: 1 ton = 2000 pounds)

5. How many moons do the gas giants have in total? (Reminder: This number may never be final - scientists are still discovering moons orbiting these planets!)

Pluto

Is Pluto a terrestrial or gaseous planet?

Neither! Pluto is a "dwarf planet" with very unique qualities. It is made up of ice and rock.

TEKS

6th Grade Earth and Space Science

Please record your responses in your science journal or with your supervisor (teacher).

(11) Earth and space. The student understands the organization of our solar system and the relationships among the various bodies that comprise it. The student is expected to:

(A) describe the physical properties, locations, and movements of the Sun, planets, Galilean moons, meteors, asteroids, and comets;

  • Identify and describe the differences between terrestrial and gaseous planets
  • Identify at least two terrestrial planets
  • Identify at least two gaseous planets
  • Identify what makes Pluto neither a terrestrial or gaseous planet
