Luis Garavito

Childhood and Upbringing

Methodology

Luis Garavito was born in Columbia, in 1957. He is the oldest of seven brothers. He was allegedly physically and emotionally abused by his father. While testifying, Garavito also claimed he was sexually abused as a child, by two male neighbours.

Garavito befriended a young boy of low social status, between the ages of 8-16. He promised them money or gifts in exchange for work or company. He took them on long walks to tire them, then tied them either to a tree, or in a way that they could move around but not escape. After torturing and raping them, he either slit their throat or decapitated the young boy.

Sociopath or Psychopath?

Luis Garavito is a psychopath because he empathized with his victims, and was able to charm young boys. He was able to gain their trust, making it easy for him to manipulate them. Garavito was also a sociopath because was uneducated and could not hold a steady job. Being a sociopath is also linked to the environment you grow up in, which applies to him because of his unstable living arrangements and abusive parents and neighbours.

Nature or Nurture?

Adult Life

I believe Luis Garavito was nurtured into becoming a serial killer. As the oldest of 7 boys, he likely fought to get the attention of his parents. He may have lost out on his childhood because he was left with the responsibility of taking care of his brothers. It is also believed that he wanted to be on the opposite side of rape; rather than being the victim, he wanted to have the control and power. In addition, his family did not have a lot of money and he dropped out of school, making him bitter and without friends.

As an adult, Garavito was constantly changing jobs, and he was an alcoholic. He attempted to take his life on numerous occasions, and was under psychiatric care for 5 years.

Victims

Luis Garavito has been charged with the murder and rape of 138 boys, between the ages of 6 and 16. In prison, he confessed to murdering 140 boys, but has drawn diagrams of where 170 bodies were found. In total, he is suspected to have killed 400 young boys, from 1992-1999. He was apprehended in April of 1999, arrested because a homeless man witnessed him trying to abuse a young boy and called the police.
