Holling Hoodhood, a seventh grader, during the time of the Vietnam War, who doesn't realize the bigger dangers like war, discrimination, and the suffering of others. Holling learns more about these dangers with the help of friends, Mrs.Baker, family, enemies, and Shakespeare. His teacher who he is forced to stay with on Wednesdays while all his other classmates are at their religious instruction makes him read Shakespeare.
Gary D. Schmidt was born in 1957, in Hicksville, New York. Gary received a Newbery Honor for his book The Wednesday Wars . Schmidt said," All my friends were either Irish Cathoilic, or Jewish, and there were some years I was the only protestant kid in the entire class." With that being said his book, The Wednesday Wars, was written about that time in his life.
The main setting for The Wednesday Wars is Camillo Junior High, most of the time in Mrs. Bakers room on a Wednesday, when all of Holling's classmates are gone and it's just him and Mrs. Baker.
- Finding Friendship and love
I recommend The Wednesday Wars to read. One reason why I would recommend it would be because it shows you that sometimes you have to look more carefully at the things around you, and when you look more carefully at stuff you can learn so much more about it.
-Coming of the Age
The most interesting thing in the book to me was that Holling had learned to understand more about the world through Shakespeare.
One Literary Item in the book is conflict. The author uses the conflict of Holling having to stay at school on Wednesdays, and he thinks his teacher, Mrs. Baker hates him, and that's the reason why she makes him read Shakespeare's work.
