The Impact on Society and the Environment

The buffalo fly trap had successfully improved the production of dairy products. As a result, cattle aren't bitten as much by the flies, therefore are able to produce better quality milk, faster. The buffalo fly population had reduced greatly, creating a positive impact on the environment. This is because by using the buffalo fly trap, there is no need to use chemical sprays and solution which are harmful to the environment.

The CSIRO

The inventors of the buffalo fly trap, the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) is the federal government agency for scientific research in Australia. it is based in Canberra and was founded in 1926 as the Advisory Council of Science and Industry. CSIRO works with leading organizations around the world.

Buffalo flies

Buffalo fly trap

The buffalo fly trap was invented to stop the serious issue of buffalo flies for dairy cattle in tropical and sub-tropical Australia. Hundreds of cattle were getting bitten by a number of flies each day. This was starting to affect the result of the milk, which caused a problem for the dairy companies. They had attempted to use pesticides to control the flies, but it was too expensive and environmentally unfriendly, so that’s how the CSIRO came up with the buffalo fly trap.

The buffalo fly trap, invented by the CSIRO (1991), is a low-tech translucent plastic tent with a dark inner tunnel lined with brushes. How it works is when a cow walks through, the flies are brushed off the cow. The flies are then attracted to the light at the top of the tent and become trapped in the solar-heated plastic dome. The flies then slowly die from drying out and fall to the ground.
