The Setting

This book takes place in present time. Kaira talks about Janice Joplin, but how no one will meet her until they reach the end of their life in heaven. It takes place in Austin, Texas at Theodore and Ginny's house. Also, it takes place at the concert hall and at Kaira's multiple hotel rooms.

Main Characters- Primary

Theodore- commonly known as Armpit. He was called this because a scorpion stung him in the armpit and the name stuck. Armpit was recently released from Camp Green Lake Juvenile Corretion Facility because he had a huge fight at a movie theatre. Camp Green Lake is where Armpit and X-ray met. Armpit most definitely one of the main characters because the story is told from his perspective most of the time.

Kaira DeLeon- a popstar who is having her concert tour around the USA and meets Armpit when his tickets are declined. Kaira is another important character ebcause the story is told from her perspective at times.

X-Ray- Armpit's best friend who came up the idea to sell Kaira's tickets. X-Ray and Armpit became best friends at Camp Green Lake

Main Character- Secondary

Ginny- Armpit's next door neighbor. She has a disibility that makes her have seizures and talk with a stutter.

Dectective Newberg- the dectective that interviewed Armpit when he found out the tickets were fake.

El Genius- Kaira's manager who Kaira hates and wants to fire once she is 18. El Genius is dating Kaira's mom but only to get Kaira's fame and fortune.

Summary

Armpit and X-ray buy Kaira DeLeon concert tickets to resell them. Armpit asks Tatiana (a girl in his class) if she would like to go to the concert with him. When Tatiana can't go Armpit asks Ginny his next door neighbor and they go together. It turns out that X-ray gave them fake tickets and Ginny has seizure so they are taken backstage. The two of them meet Kaira, and a few days later Kaira calls Armpit and has lunch with him. After a while Kaira misses Armpit and tells him to see her. Before Kaira called Armpit recieves a letter that says some private things that Kaira is embaressed about when Armpit brings them up. Armpit is interviewed about the ticktes but doesn't rat out X-ray. Armpit and Kaira get mad at each other and then Armpit saves Kaira when disaster strikes.

Conflict.....

The conflict that Armpit endures is how to resolve the problem of the fake tickets X-ray gave him. This is a man vs. self conflict. He doesn't want to tell the dectective that X-ray gave him the tickets because he didn't want to get X-ray in trouble with the police again.Yet, he didn't want to lie to the detective.Also, Armpit has another man vs. self conflict. When Felix wants the letter that Kaira wrote to Armpit and says that if Armpit doesn't give him the it to him he will turn in X-ray into the police. On the other hand, he found out that Kaira was upset that Armpit was going to give away the letter. Armpit has to figure out whether he wants to save his best friend or make Kaira happy.

Genre......

The book Small Steps is realistic fiction. This story could be happen in real life. For example, a boy could be called "Armpit" and meet the popsensation Kaira DeLeon. The part that makes this fiction is that these characters are made-up but this story could have happened in everyday life.

Theme....What is the lesson learned???

Armpit learns that if you really care about a friend you will do anything to save them. He does this with X-ray. When X-ray tells Felix about the letter that Kaira wrote, Felix threatens to tell the cops about the tickets and get X-ray in prison unless Armpit gives him the letter. Armpit decides it is more important to keep X-ray out of jail then to keep Kaira happy by keeping the letter. X-ray would be in a lot of trouble, one because he gave out fake tickets and because he just came out of Green Lake.

What's my opinion??

I really enjoyed this book. It had a great plot that kept you from not putting the book down. It was filled with conflicts around every corner and romance.

Movie?? What do you think??

I think this should be a movie. I would love to see how Arpmit sneaks out to meet Kaira. Also, I think it would be funny to have the stuffed animal elections. Lastly I would love to see the look on Armpit's face when he read the letter Kaira wrote.

Dynamic Character

(A character that CHANGES)

Kaira is a dynamic character multiple times. In the beggining she really likes Armpit and thinks he is nice and sweet. Once he tells her about selling the letter she freaks out and really hates him for thinking about selling something private like that. Again she changes when Armpit saves her. She writes about him in her newest song.

Static Character..... (A character that stays the same)

El Genius is a static character because he always wanted to get rid of Kaira. He really never liked Kaira but dated her mom to keep getting money. This really shows in the end when he attacked Kaira at her hotel room.
