World War I marked a turning point in the textile industry. The United States' entrance into the war
Crown Cotton Mill No. 2, located on Chattanooga Avenue in Dalton, is pictured in the late 1920s. Established in 1884, Crown Cotton Mill brought much-needed economic activity to Whitfield County and by 1916 employed 1,000 workers.Crown Cotton Mill
created a high demand for cloth to outfit American troops, and many Georgia mills were awarded government contracts. As the workload at the factories began to increase, however, male mill operatives were drafted into the armed forces, and some of the mills' women workers headed home to help on family farms; labor shortages occurred as a result.
When the war started there was a major increase in the demand for cotton for the textile mills. the cotton business flourished as more and more cotton was needed to make the u.s. soldier uniforms.
Camp Hancock near Augusta, Georgia was a military cantonment that was opened during World War I.
It included an airfield and it served as a base for a reserves unit.
Chamblee, northeast of Atlanta, was selected for one of the state's largest army cantonments. It was named Camp Gordon in honor of John Brown Gordon, who was a major general in the Confederate army, a Georgia governor, a U.S. senator, and a businessman. The camp opened in July 1917, becoming a training site and home of the famous 82nd Airborne Division. The division was composed of men from several different states, but men from Georgia made up almost half its number
Camp Benning
Fort Benning was built October 1918 and is still in use by the United States Army. It is an army post located in Columbus Georgia USA. You will daily find over 120000 people at this base which covers 182000 acres. Originally Fort Benning was used for basic training of WW1 troops and currently has an infantry school.
Paratroopers are trained at this facility as well and it has drop towers of 249 feet to train for parachuting. The school is currently home to both the army's parachuting and infantry schools. The school has also been used for other purposes such as training soldiers and policemen from Latin America.
There are 4 main posts within the base. They include Harmony Church, Kelley Hill, Main Post, and Sand Hill. The school was named after Brigadier General Henry L. Benning.
