All students working toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma are required to write the OSSLT in Grade 10.

Successful completion of the OSSLT is a graduation requirement.

If you are not successful you can write the test again or take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course.

What is the OSSLT?

  • it tests your reading and writing skills

  • you will be reading: an information paragraph, a news report, dialogue, a real-life narrative and a graphic text

  • you will be writing: long writing tasks, short writing tasks and multiple choice answers

Only the Answer Booklets will be marked.

So, You must put all of your work in the Answer Booklet!

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

(OSSLT)

Test includes different types of reading:

  • Information paragraph
  • News report
  • Dialogue
  • Real-life narrative
  • Graphic text

Each reading passage will be followed by:

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Paragraph responses (summary, main idea, making connections and/or opinion)

Each open response has 6 lines of writing space (3 sentences)

  • The test consists of two sets of booklets and a student answer sheet/survey

  • You have 75 minutes for each booklet

  • Once the time is up, the booklet you are working on is collected

  • If you have an IEP, you will have received an accommodation letter for the OSSLT

Thursday March 30th, 2017.

The OSSLT is a provincial test

of literacy (reading and writing) skills students have acquired by Grade 10.

It is based on the literacy skills expected in The Ontario Curriculum across all subject areas up to the end of Grade 9.

- teachers at GELA will be administrating and overseeing the test.....

But, we will not be marking the OSSLT!

- the test will not count towards your English mark
