Audience Mindset Affects the Performance of a Scene

*Racism effects humility of Othello

* Pauses leave different interpretations in different places

* Rage can be both loud and soft

Topic & Explanation

Othello explains at the end of the play that he "Lov'd not wisely, but too well" (Act 5, Scene 2). Illustrate the consequences of loving "not wisely" as it applies to three different characters.

* Said after he kills Desdemona

* Loving a person not with the brain or mind, but with feelings instead.

* Loving without using their brain applies to three other characters in the play. (which we will explain in 3 arguments)

Argument #3

Character: Roderigo

Iago:

...So shall you have a shorter journey to your desires by the means I shall then have to prefer them, and the impediment most profitably removed, without the which there were no expectation of our prosperity.

Roderigo:

I will do this, if you can bring it to any opportunity.

Roderigo:

It’s silly to live when life is torture. The only cure is death.

Iago:

Oh, how stupid! I’ve been alive for twenty-eight years, and I’ve never met a man who knew what was good for him. I’d rather be a baboon than kill myself out of love for some woman I can’t have.

Roderigo:

What should I do? I know it’s foolish to be so much in love, but I can’t help it.

  • Iago tells Roderigo that Desdemona and Cassio are falling for eachother and if he somehow makes Cassio loose his position he will have a chance with Desdemona

  • Iago knows Rodrigo will do as he asks because he knows that Roderigo is overcome with feelings for Desdemona that he'll do anything to have her love him

  • Roderigo is so in love with Desdemona that he is willing to do as Iago says and ruin Cassio's reputation if it will help make a relationship with Desdemona

One who does not love with the intelligence of their mind becomes blinded by the passionate feelings within their heart.

Iago:

...I’ll get them so riled up that they’ll only calm down when Cassio’s fired. To get what you want, you need to get Cassio out of the way. If you don’t do that, things are hopeless for you.

Roderigo:

I’ll do it, if you help me out.

Roderigo:

It is silliness to live when to live is torment, and then have we a prescription to die when death is our physician.

Iago:

Oh, villainous! I have looked upon the world for four times seven years, and since I could distinguish betwixt a benefit and an injury I never found man that knew how to love himself. Ere I would say I would drown myself for the love of a guinea hen, I would change my humanity with a baboon.

Roderigo:

What should I do? I confess it is my shame to be so fond, but it is not in my virtue to amend it.

Roderigo is so in love with Desdemona that he is willing to do anything such as kill cassio, just to get Desdemona to love him even though she never will because she is married to Othello, do you think readers should feels sorry for Roderigo knowing he cannot love Desdamona? do you feel sorry for him? why or why not?

  • Roderigo becomes more upset when his and Iago's plan to ruin their marriage by using Desdemona's father doesn’t work

  • he tells Iago that he is going to drown himself

  • Roderigo's words reveal his weak character

  • Iago says it is stupid for Roderigo to kill himself over a woman but Roderigo doesn't listen because he is not thinking logically but is being controlled by his feelings

  • Roderigo is so in love with Desdemona that he feels her love is more important than his own life
