I AM NOT ESTHER

Modern Lessons

Fleur Beale

A lesson to be learned form this novel is to be who you are. Nobody can tell you or make you do anything. No matter what the situation, you control every move you make, you can control the outcome.

Another lesson is that not everything never giving up. If you want something as bad as you want to breath, then you will be successful in accomplishing your goals.

Fleur Beale is a former teacher from New Zealand. She was born on Febuary 22, 1945. She was inspired to write this book when she learned one of her students was beaten by his father and expelled from his family for going against their religious beliefes.

Plot Analysis

This story follows the adventure of Kirby, a 16-year-old girl from New Zealand, as she is forced to question who she truly is. At first Kirby leads an almost normal life; her mother works at a hospital, Kirby has many friends, then things take a turn for the worst. Her mother tells her she has to leave the country for a while and leave Kirby with family that she didn't even know existed.

This may seem like something a caring mother would do when she has to leave the country, but what Kirby mother has done to her is fated to be something far worse. Kirby's relatives look normal, except for the way the dress, speak and act. Kirby's family is part of a religious cult called the Children of the Faith. They force Kirby to change her style of dress, her way of speak and even her name. Kirby, or now Esther, is ow beginning her long walk down the road of questioning who she truly is.

Esther is now forced to live this new life which she hates, but when she acts out of line she is punished with a day of isolation. Soon, after about three or four months of all of this stuff, Esther and her older cousin Daniel decide to leave. What faces Kirby on the outside world is something that a simple medicine can fix; she has to decide who she is: Esther or Kirby.

Her decision is made with the help of her mother, who never left the country, but was locked away in a mental ward for having a mental break down in the airport. Kirby's mother tells Kirby her story of the life she had with the children of the faith. It turns out the reason she left or had to leave was because she was raped by another man in the religion and had become pregnant. Kirby's mother was beaten by her father and then turned out into a world she knew nothing about.

The story ends with Kirby and her mother finally going back to almost normal lives. In the end of the story, Kirby says the final line, "Esther wasn't there. Daniel was right. Esther was dead

Major Themes

In 'I am not Esther', there are only really two major themes.

Finding Yourself:

Kirby is forced to change herself to fit the expectations of the religion she is carelessly thrown into. She later has to convince herself who she truly is; Kirby- the wild, smart and courageous young girl- or Esther- the obedient child who seems to be a hollow shell.

Wanting Freedom:

Kirby is trapped in a world that isn't hers, forced to be someone she isn't and forced to do things she would never want to do. Kirby just wants to breath again, like she did before the mess started. Kirby just want to be free.
