He went got his bachelor's degree from gallaudet college on 1949 and became a teacher at West Virginia School for the Deaf & Blind. While there he collected many films for his students to watch and believed that children could benefit from watching & comprehending media in general.

In 1962 he became involved in the Captioned Films for the Deaf program ( now called the Described & Captioned Media Program) which was when he lead a team to create the closed captioning for televisions. Very few people wanted his invention but he created it regardless of the lack of support of others.

With his new invention many tv programs created closed captioning for networks, after many laws and struggles it even spread to other countries around the world. And as an unexpected bonus it was translated in to other languages so people of foreign tongue to a network can enjoy their shows in the language of their chosing.

For creating the closed captioning for televisions he became "the father of closed captioning" and was listed as one of 77 greatest achievers in a book about the Deaf community.
