On April 27, 1994, South Africa held its first democratic elections. Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the country's first black president on May 10, 1994, with de Klerk as his first deputy.From 1994 until June 1999, Mandela worked to bring about the transition from minority rule and apartheid to black majority rule.
In 1993, Mandela and President de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work toward dismantling apartheid. After he got the award neogations with African Americans and whites still prevailed.

He went to prison more than once and the first time he went was in 1956, him and 150 others were arrested and charged with treason for their political advocacy. In 1963 Mandela was brought to trial again. This time, he and 10 other ANC leaders were sentenced to life imprisonment for political offenses, including sabotage. He spent 27 years in prison.

Rolihlahla Mandela was his real name until he started going to school when he got his nickname Nelson. He was in born july,18,1918 in Mvezo. At a small age he already wanted to help African Americans. When he was little he used to play with other little boys and played with little dolls that were kind of like a exapmle of what he want for the men and it was to help them and have the same rights like the whites did. His father died when Nelson was 9 from lung diesease. Nelson was then adopted by a cheif.

Nelson was married 3 times and has 6 children. He also married Graca Machel but he died after only a few years with her.
