Whip

E

A whip is a tool that can be used for beating or urging of an animal/human. In Animal Farm a whip can represent a tool of the humans. It represents torture that the animals are free from when Jones was scared away.

The meaning of equal in a society is to all be given treatment according to their needs. However in Animal Farm pigs are treated much better than all the other animals for no real reason. There is not much equality in Animal Farm.

Yerk

Offension

M

To yerk is to strike or lash with a whip. This action can represent the animals slavery under Jones's power when he would whip the animals if they had not completed the task at hand. Yerking is a thing of the past in Animal Farm, after the animals rebelled against Jones the animals were free of whipping from Jones.

Offension is attacking or assaulting. In Animal Farm the animals attack and assault Jones and his friends when they come to take the farm back. The assault resulted in a win when the battle was over despite the fact that there were casualties.

Manipulation

Manipulation is using someone else for your own needs. In Animal Farm the pigs manipulate other animals by using their intelligence to convince the other animals into doing things they don't want to do.

Propaganda

Napoleon

Propaganda is a form of manipulation. Propaganda is used to change people's view on certain things. In Animal Farm Squealer spreads propaganda so that people will support Napoleon. The use of propaganda in Animal Farm changes the view of many of the animals in Animal Farm.

Napoleon is one of the leaders in Animal Farm. Napoleon is a pig who become evil throughout the story. Napoleon ends up being exactly like the humans that he once hated. Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin from the Russian Revolution

Fear

Fear is the emotion of being afraid of something or someone. In Animal Farm, Napoleon uses fear to convince (threaten) the other animals to vote for him. Napoleon won the vote by using fear to scare Snowball away, therefore he would have no opposition. Just like in the Russian Revolution when Joseph Stalin drove Leon Trotsky out of Russia using fear.

Tyranny

Tyranny is a cruel regime. Tyranny is a cruel or harsh act. In Animal Farm an example of tyranny is the execution of the other animals at the hand of Napoleon for supporting Snowball after his absence.

Genocide

Hierarchy

I

Injustice

Hierarchy is a ranking system depending on status and or authority. It is the ranking in a group/organization. In Animal Farm the pigs are at the top of the hierarchy and the other animals would be ranked upon at animal they are and what they provide for Animal Farm.

Genocide is killing of a group of people usually of a specific category. In Animal Farm Napoleon commits genocide when he orders for his hounds to murder the animals who have supported Snowball since his absence from Animal Farm.

Injustice is unfairness and lack of justice. There is injustice on Animal Farm. One example is the pigs receiving all the special treatment just because they say they should. Another example of injustice is Napoleon slaughtering the other animals for simply supporting Snowball.

Jerk

In this instance jerk means to beat or to strike. To beat someone is a habit of the humans. After the animals took over the farm, they were all free from being beaten by humans. From then on no animal should be allowed to hurt another. Beating was something of the past to the animals after the farm was captured.

Snowball

Vice

Vice is bad or wicked behaviour. In Animal Farm Napoleon shows vice when executes some of the farm animals. The reason was simply for supporting Snowball after he was driven out of Animal Farm.

Snowball is one of the leaders in Animal Farm. The book portrays Snowball as a character who really wants to help with no ill intentions. Snowball represents Leon Trotsky from the Russian Revolution.

Defiance

Comrades

Defiance is refusing to obey someone or something. In Animal Farm the animals defy Jones which leads to a rebellion where the animals take over the farm. This is symbolic of the Russian people (inspired by Vladmir Lenin) defying against Czar Nicholas II.

Rebellion

Rebellion is acting against an order. To rebel is to fight against a force. In Animal Farm there is a rebellion against Jones resulting in the animals taking over the farm. This is symbolic of when the Russians rebelled against Czar Nicholas II

A comrade is a friend or an ally with whom you have a strong relationship with. In Animal Farm the pigs refer to the other animals as their comrades, they constantly refer to them as comrades to help convince the other animals to support them. The pigs use the word comrade(s) to manipulate the other animals. In the Russian Revolution

Apples are a type of fruit that grow from an apple tree. In Animal Farm the apples are symbolic of the inequality within Animal Farm. The pigs take all the apples for themselves the other animals do not get any.

Knowledge

Beasts

A beast is an especially dangerous or large animal, beast can also refer to a mean or horrible person. In Animal Farm many of the animals can be considered beasts. Napoleon can be considered a beast for his horrible actions such as execution of the animals.

Knowledge are facts or information which someone or something gained through experience. In Animal Farm the pigs have lots of knowledge about the world and they use this to manipulate the other animals into believing absolutely anything the pigs say.

Labour

Labour is work, labouring is to work hard. In Animal Farm the pigs make all the other animals do all the labour. The other animals do all of the labour while the pigs give ideas and supervise.
