Race and Gender Wage Gap

Golden Line

Video

"That was more than a days pay daddy said" (Pattillo 9).

This is our golden line because at that point in the book they are at the grocery store and are being over charged, they pay the money either way but it cost them over a days work and were over charged by 22$, this reflects our social justice issue because the black community at this time didn't get paid as much as the white community.

By: Sam Schwager and Jeff Rains

This video mostly talks about the gender wager gap and how men usually get paid more than women, but it also talks about the race wage gap

Our Issue Related to a Catholic Social Teaching

How it relates to our Catholic Social Issue

It relates to it because it talks about the unfair wages between race and gender and how white men get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to wages.

Catholic Social Teaching- Catholic social teaching is the body of doctrine developed by the Catholic Church on matters of social justice.

Our social justice issue relates to dignity to Work and the Rights of Workers because every race and every gender deserves to make the same amount of money

3. The article describes the effect of differences in benefit status on the gap in total compensation by gender and race. Numerous studies have posed similar questions to understand differences in wages between white male and other workers. They document significant wage gaps that are explained in part by differences in observable worker characteristics. The component of the wage gap not explained by differences in observable worker characteristics is often interpreted as a measure of discrimination. The gender and race differential in total employer compensation is unclear. On the one hand, the fact that white men are more likely to receive benefit coverage than other workers tends to broaden the gap in total compensation. Since fringe benefits are in some cases unrelated to wage compensation, they may tend to narrow the gap in total compensation. All employees in a firm receive the same coverage. Health benefits will, therefore tend to narrow the differential in total compensation. Women utilize medical services about twice as much as men, narrowing further the effective compensation differential between men and women.

How it relates to our Catholic Social Teaching

It relates to it beacause it talks about the how people were given wages not on performance, but on race and gender.

How it relates to our Catholic Social Teaching

This relates to the Catholic Social teaching because it talks about how the wage gap grew between whites and blacks in the 1940's-1990's

After ww2, the black-white wage gap shrank rapidly, until the mid 1970’s. This trend was reversed in the 1980’s. In contrast, the gender pay gap persisted for four decades after ww2, Only in the 1980’s did it start to narrow, yet it showed only a little progress in the 1990’s. Although a large number of studies have been purported to investigate the sources of male-female and black-white pay gaps, most have not addressed the issue of whether or not the individuals being observed have changed their economic status over their lifetimes.

KENNEDY, ANGELA, et al. "Wage Discrimination Based On Gender And Race." Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin 75.2 (2008): 13-19. Academic Search Premier. Web. 26 Jan. 2017.

Wage discrimination can be defined as arbitrarily assigning wages to workers based on factors unrelated to job performance or merit (Coleman, 2003). The Equal Pay Act of 1963 outlawed all forms of wage discrimination based on gender. Then came Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlaws wage discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. In 1981, the Supreme Court broadened the scope of Title VII beyond the Equal Pay Act of 1963, asserting that the latter prohibits wage discrimination even when the jobs are not the same. From a practical standpoint, however, it is worth noting that wage discrimination laws are often difficult to enforce because they are hard to prove and win in court. In recent years, enforcement by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has been lax, placing the economic burden on the employee. In fact, seldom are cases alleging wage discrimination filed.
