National Governing Bodies (NGBs)

How do they spot talent?

-The UK talent team has run 9 national athlete recruitment projects, which have assessed over 7,000 athletes.

-These projects have resulted in over 100 athletes selected by sports into the World Class system with 364 international appearances made and a total of 123 international medals won.

The Performance Pathway Team is a collaboration between UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport. They identify and develop talented athletes.

The work of the Performance Pathway Team focuses on improving their systems of performance development through the following four work areas:

1. Providing thought provoking, educational opportunities to development coaches and managers.

2. Enabling sports to benchmark their performance development pathways.

3. Undertaking innovative research projects to gain a greater understanding.

4. Applying technical frontline solutions in partnership with sports to identify and develop talented athletes.

The NGB is responisible for setting and interpreting the rules and guidelines of different sports, aswell as providing the correct level coaches and officials.

Some sports have both minor and major officials; for example in Badminton, you have the overall umpire but you also have the line judges and the service judges.

What competitions do they run and organise?

We found that the NGB's are reponsible for nearly all the sporting organisations including Sport england, FA football association and the Youth sports trust, these associations are responsible for all sorts of competitions like the 4-levelled Sainsbury's school games.

The sports include: Archery, Football, Rounders, Athletics, Golf, Rugby Union, Badminton, Gymnastics, Squash & Racketball, Baseball & Softball, Handball, Swimming, Basketball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Cricket, Judo, Tennis, Cycling, Netball, Volleyball, Fencing, Orienteering and Lacrosse.

How do they improve coaching?

-Enable every sportsman and sportswomen to follow their dreams, have fun and fulfil their potential in sport.

-They set up coaching classes they also have different stages of coaching for a range of different sports.

An organisation called Sports Coach UK was formed as a charity to help recruit, develop and retain coaches (supporting 46 NGB's and 49 county sports partnerships).

How do they achieve their aims?

-Aim to bring coaching to the centre of all sports so that everyone can work at their full potential in their chosen sport.

-NGBs have created many companies all over the UK that try to encourage people to participate in sport and coaching.

-Badminton England and British Wheelchair Basketball.

-NGBs are a non-profit charity, which means they do not focus on making money.

-The work that they do is vital for organisations such as Sport England.

What are the NGB's

-Responsible for managing their specific sport.

-They choose where and how to invest the money.

-They have invested around £500,000,000 46 different NGB's.
