Charles de Gaulle returns to presidency and conducts a referendum. After an almost unanimous vote, Algeria is granted its independence.

French colonization of Algeria
Spain expels muslims from its soil and conquers great part of northern Algeria. Algerians ask Turkish corsairs (pirates) for help. The Barbarossa brothers help defeat the Spanish and then take Algeria under the Ottoman empire
Two factions of Muslim protests:
1. Wanted to be completely independent from France
2. Wanted to be assimilated on equal terms with France
Berber speaking peoples are the earliest
record of civilization in Algeria. They
were organized in small political units.
Romans defeat Carthage and take control of Northern Algeria, the southern areas remain under non-united Berber rule

Arab control. At first, he Arab and Berber cultures merged significantly, the people intermarried and Berbers adopted Islam and the Arabic language. However the Algerians fought against Arab rule for 35 years. They were then enslaved by the Arabs until they led a revolution that gave them temporary power.
Dey was appointed to rule Algeria as a basically independent province. Most of its revenues came from pirating and it became a port for the exportation of slaves into Europe.
