  • Damage to the arousal reflex

  • Stopping of breathing is unknown

What is SIDS?

Some factors are those which a parent cannot control

Sex: Boys over girls

Age: 2nd - 3rd months

Race: African-American, American-Indian, and Alaska Natives

Sleeping Conditions

Defined as- the unexplained asphyxial death, during sleep, of a seemingly healthy child less than a year old.

  • Stomach/side
  • Face down on a very soft surface
  • With parents

Risk Factors

Some factors can put a baby at extra risk for SIDS such as:

  • Low birth weight/Premature birth
  • Brain abnormalities
  • Respiratory infection
  • Environmental stressors

Pregnancy Factors

  • Younger than 20
  • Drug user
  • Inadequate prenatal care
