the Cayuse Indians.

After the Cayuse were defeated we claimed the land and made Oregon so we could form a government. The only survivors of the Whitman Massacre were mostly women and children. The Cayuse Indian numbers were reduced a lot by the Cayuse war between the U.S. Military and the Cayuse. When the Cayuse that attacked the mission learned that whites were destroying Cayuse villages farther up river the indians came back to the mission piled up wagons and supplies in buildings and burned the buildings.

The Cayuse were once rulers of a vast homeland of more than 6million acres in what is now known as Washington and Oregon. The Cayuse were some of the first tribes to have horses along the coast. The Cayuse had a reputation for fierce warriors even though they were small in numbers.

Where the war took place. And after the war.

Cayuse Indian

The war took place about 7 miles west of present day Walla Walla. After the war the U.S. sent the Cayuse to a reservation with the Umatilla Indians. And the Cayuse's land was confiscated from the Cayuse. The war opened up Cayuse territory for white settlement.

How and why and when the war started.

The war started on November 29, 1847 and lasted until 1855 even though the tribesman that killed the Whitmans were hung on June 3rd 1850. The war started because Dr. Whitman tried to cure the Cayuse Indians when they got ill and the Indians that Dr. Whitman cured ended up dying so the Cayuse decided to kill them and the settlers. After the Whitman Massacre was done the U.S. sent an army of 500 troops to bring the Indians responsible for the massacre back to have a trial.
